You’ll Want To Read This If You’re Considering New Flooring

You’re not alone in thinking that flooring is a big decision. There are dozens of options and even more factors to consider. So before you give up early, we’re here to help by highlighting top questions to ask:

  1. Should I consider carpet? Today’s carpet is different than in your grandmother’s shag carpet day. Improvements in technology have lead to better colors, durability, design and features like waterproof backing and components that provide spill protection. In an article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Drew Scott of HGTV’s “Property Brothers” advised parents to look at flooring options that can take a beating. “If you have kids, pets — whatever makes a lot of messes in your house — you need to have something durable,” he said.
  2. Can you escape humidity? If you live near Lake Murray Floor Covering, then you live in an area of high humidity. That might not be a big deal, but if you have an area of your home with exposure to the elements or high humidity under your home then you need to talk to an expert. Exposure to humidity over 60% will potentially cause your hardwoods to expand and press into each other.
  3. What if grandma moves in? According to Pollfish’s recent study about residential flooring trends, a family change comes in third behind damaged flooring and updated décor as reasons to replace flooring. Think about upcoming life events when making a flooring change. Will there be babies crawling around? Are we getting a dog? Do we need slip-resistant flooring for the older members of our family?
  4. What’s the price? 66% of homeowners say they would choose hardwoods for their dream home; however, next to ceramic floors hardwoods on average are the most expensive. Balance price with a long-term vision. Saving a few dollars today could cost you long-term in the form of having to replace the flooring due to a lack of durability or a lackluster installation.

In summary, the Old English proverb of ‘You get what you pay for’ rings true here. ‘We do our best to help people evaluate flooring decisions from all angles,’ said Clayton King, Sales Manager of Lake Murray Floor Covering in Irmo, South Carolina. ‘Price is always going to be a factor, but we also want to help families select flooring that will serve them well for many years to come.’

Design FOMO

Fear of missing out is a real thing people. Whether we want to admit it or not, its hard to stomach when your friend next door pulls off a phenomenal redesign of their living room using the most recent interior design trends. With that in mind, here are a few trends to consider when doing a remodel or room reno:

Color: We’re calling it – blue and yellow is going to be the next big color combo. Not only do they have complementary color harmony, but they evoke correlating emotions. Yellow is vibrant and cheerful while blue represents creativity and serenity.

Think outside of the box: Hardwoods in a bathroom. Stone in a bedroom. Modern day design calls for unique design elements in pattern, texture and materials. Maybe a nice checkered design in marble? Think about it.

Everyone hangs out in the kitchen: According to a recent survey by Pollfish, next to the living room the kitchen is the room of the home most considered for a flooring remodel. Modern day kitchen flooring has evolved. Consider playful options like a patterned hardwood or stylish tile design. Don’t hesitate to play with shapes or even materials like cork, epoxy, bamboo and concrete.

Focus on the niches: One fun trend is a focus on the less obvious areas of the home for pops of design: hallways, laundry rooms or the pantry. These normally smaller spaces can further accentuate design features and often are less costly to update.

‘Our designers stay on top of what is trending, not only nationally but what they are observing in the area,’ says Bill Greene, owner of Lake Murray Floor Covering. ‘In the 25 years we’ve been in business, trends have certainly changed. We have to stay current so we can be true expert design consultants for our customers.’
